Home décor in 2024 will have a lot of color, pattern, and uniqueness. Bolder, brighter colors have replaced warm grays and neutral tones in a big way.
Considering the high cost and permanence of flooring, installing a patterned floor may seem dangerous. However, when done properly, it may produce a faultless appearance.
Any material that, when laid, produces a particular pattern, such as wood, cork, or tile, can be used to make patterned flooring. It won’t be horizontal; instead, it will be repeated squares or zig zags. Checkerboard tiles, hexagon or pinwheel tiles, hand-painted tiles, parquet squares, Versailles parquet panels, mosaic or brick tiles, herringbone tiles and parquet are a few of the most popular patterns for flooring.
Tiles are a common material for patterned flooring since they are simple to customize. There are tiles with geometric patterns, flowers, and pinwheels carved into them. Hand-painted tiles are much better, as they provide infinite color combinations and more detailed designs.
Additionally, there are checkered tiles, which employ two conventional square tiles arranged in a checkered design. While any color tile can be used for this, matching black and white is the most popular.
Certain patterned carpet materials are a natural fit for some environments. Entryways look wonderful with checkerboard tiling. It goes so well with wood. Checkerboards are also very popular on patios and outside, and handmade tiles are also popular in bathrooms right now. The traditional herringbone or parquet design works well in a study or dining area, but it may also be utilized in the living room or the entire house.
Because patterned flooring requires intricate tile cutting or woodworking, it is typically more expensive than regular flooring. Certain firms provide luxury vinyl plank and engineered hardwood parquet flooring at a price point that is similar to that of unpatterned flooring made of the same material. However, when compared to more conventional flooring options, most patterned flooring is more expensive.
If you want a hardwood or luxury vinyl plank with patterns, be prepared to pay an additional 80% to 90%. Generally speaking, tile flooring is more expensive. Pricing is affected by the type of tile.
Installing flooring is a really long-term house upgrade. Although it’s a costly task, flooring may always be replaced. Removing bathroom vanities or cabinets is another requirement when replacing flooring, which could add to the expense. Some homeowners may be reluctant to put in patterned flooring.
“If you’re nervous about adding patterned flooring, start in smaller rooms, like the laundry room or a powder room,” Slingerland advises. If you rent and are unable to make long-term flooring modifications or just want to give it a try, try utilizing peel-and-stick tiles to create patterned flooring.
Zamora upgraded the tile flooring in his rental kitchen by adding peel-and-stick tiles. Although it was in keeping with the design of his house, he feels that the burgundy tiles gave it more personality and vibrancy.
You can transform it without investing a lot of time or money by going wild with color, as Zamora did, with temporary solutions like peel-and-stick tiles. If you’re pursuing the permanent way, though, it’s best to stay with classic, muted hues and use strong crown molding or wall paint.
